The Impact of Addiction in Florida

Florida Drug Addiction Treatment Centers

The Florida Keys Archipelago is a Caribbean-flavoured getaway with lovely beaches and clear blue waters. Orlando is a popular theme park, and the Everglades are home to alligators and manatees. Tampa and St Petersburg feature expansive beaches and picturesque historic sites. Tallahassee is a famous university town with a distinctly southern feel and a gateway to the beaches.

Florida is one of the nation’s main epicenters for substance abuse as well as drug-related overdoses. In 2014, around 410,000 Florida residents were addicted to drugs and alcohol–and over the last 10 years, 12% of all deaths in the state were attributed to substance abuse. It has been estimated that about 363,000 people use illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin every year in Florida. In addition, more than 20% of all admissions to state-funded recovery facilities in 2015 were attributed to opioids.

Clearly there are plenty of things to enjoy Florida, but that does not mean Florida is without drug and alcohol problems.

The state’s drug epidemic has led to higher crime rates, increased costs of law enforcement, productivity loss, and a steadily growing death toll. Due to drug-related activities, Florida has the fifth-highest rate of violent crime in the United States. In 2016 alone there were over 35,000 DUI arrests. The epidemic has reached such high levels that Governor Rick Scott declared the issue a public health emergency. As a result, he proposed legislation to provide $54 million in grants to expand substance abuse prevention and education programs and to provide treatment services for those in need.
