In 2014, around 410,000 Florida residents were addicted to drugs and alcohol–and over the last 10 years, 12% of all deaths in the state were attributed to substance abuse. It has been estimated that about 363,000 people use illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin every year in Florida. - Alcohol is the most commonly cited abused substance in Florida. In 2009, 28,352 people were admitted for alcohol addiction or alcohol dependence with a secondary substance treatment. Between 2003 and 2012, a total of 8,000 drunk driving fatalities were reported in the state.
- Prescription drugs are also a commonly abused substance. In the year 2005-2006, 777,000 Floridians reported using prescription drugs for non-medical use. Hydrocodone and OxyContin continue to be a serious problem in the state. The Florida Medical Examiners report that on any given day approximately five people in Florida die as a direct result of a prescription drug overdose.
- Cocaine is the main drug threat and is available statewide. Between 2005 and 2006, 390,000 Floridians reported using cocaine. In 2009, 11,552 people were admitted to drug abuse treatment programs for smoking or ingesting cocaine. In 2015, 1,834 people died of cocaine overdoses.
- Marijuana is also on the list of most used drugs. In 2007, 24,812 Floridians were admitted to drug and alcohol addiction rehabs for marijuana dependence.
- Heroin is another substance used by Floridians. In 2009, 1,721 individuals entered treatment for heroin addiction.
