The Impact of Addiction in Hawaii

Hawaii Drug Rehab and Inpatient Alcohol Rehabs

Oahu, home to the state capital of Honolulu, is the most famous island in the region. Big-wave surfing began here in the 1950s, and the pros are now on a pilgrimage to Waimea Bay. Maui seems to have won every best beach award, and Makena Beach is a frequent Instagram star. Molokai is also a fast ferry hop from Maui and boasts the highest sea cliffs in the country.

Hawaii, the state best known for its beautiful beaches and blue waters, is struggling with unprecedented drug and alcohol abuse. Since 2014, the rates of drug and alcohol abuse in paradise have been increasing faster than ever before. However, due to the many rehabilitation centers throughout the islands, Hawaii has been able to help a vast majority of its residents deal with their substance abuse problems.

There is definitely a lot to love about Hawaii, but drug addiction and alcohol misuse plague some places.

Regardless, the state still experiences its fair share of overdoses although comparatively, the rate is not that high. Hawaii ranks 12th lowest in the entire nation. The state does, however, take fourth place for teenage drug use. In Hawaii, children as young as 10 years old have been arrested for possession of drugs. Most of these arrests are related to marijuana and/or methamphetamines. Many of these minors not only possess these drugs but also use them. Of the two, marijuana is the drug most commonly used by minors in Hawaii. More than 30% of all high schoolers admit to having used the drug more than once.

Alcohol abuse is also a significant problem in Hawaii. Over 100,000 Hawaiian residents over the age of 12 are dependent on alcohol. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the rate of alcohol abuse in Hawaii has exceeded that of the United States every year since 2010.
Based on the abuse and dependency of alcohol in the state, Hawaii is the 8th “drunkest” state in the nation.

Worst Drugs in Hawaii

  1. Alcohol use and abuse have become so common in Hawaii, that in 2011 more than 13% of all arrests made in the state were for driving under the influence of alcohol. The state’s national average for drunk driving is a full percentage above that of the rest of the country. In 2009, alcohol led to more than half of all fatal traffic accidents occurring in the state.
  2. Prescription opioid overdoses are the leading cause of death in Hawaii. There are more than 1 million prescriptions given out in the state every year–yet this number is lower than previous years due to the stronger control regulations put on prescription drugs.
  3. Marijuana is the most cited drug for substance abuse treatment admissions in Hawaii. Almost 13% of the population abuses this drug and many of them seek help at treatment centers.
  4. Methamphetamine is the most abused drug in Hawaii. Originally, methamphetamine was brought in from Asia but in recent years the drug has been imported from Mexico. Due to its wide availability and low cost, more than 35% of all incarcerated men in Hawaii entered with the drug in their system.
  5. While only about 2,000 Hawaiian residents abuse the drug every year, the effect of heroin abuse can still be seen in Hawaii. Subsequently, heroin-related overdoses in the state have seen an increasing trend since 2013.

Impactful Addiction Stats

  1. Every year, more than 20% of all Hawaiians over the age of 12 participate in binge drinking.
  2. The number of people dying from drug abuse in Hawaii is higher than the number of people dying from firearms and accidents.

  7. Roughly 80% of all drug-related crimes in Hawaii are somehow related to the production and sale of methamphetamines.
  8. In 2010, more than 6,000 residents in Hawaii entered substance abuse treatment programs. Over 60% of those admitted were male.
  9. According to the Hawaii Meth Project, methamphetamine abuse in Hawaii is so common that the state loses $500 million every year due to its abuse.
