Alcohol dependence and abuse pose a major problem throughout the state–especially among minors between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. For this age group, in particular, Idaho has consistently ranked amongst the top ten states in the nation for alcohol abuse and dependence over the past decade.

Opioids, like everywhere else in the nation, are also responsible for many substance abuse problems in the Gem State. Idaho medical providers write a higher than average amount of prescriptions for opioids at 61.9% compared to the rest of the nation which falls at 51.4%. From these prescriptions, pain relievers form the largest threat to teenagers in Idaho.
To combat these drug problems, the state has adopted several laws and opened more rehabilitation centers. One of the most important laws implemented mandates that all healthcare professionals in Idaho have access to naloxone, which provides a temporary block of the effects of opioids, thereby giving medics more time to help overdosed individuals.
