For the wooded hills of Brown County State Park, hikers, bikers and rock climbers are the beeline.

While Indiana only ranks 14th in the nation for drug abuse, drugs are still a major concern for the state. This is due to its location making it a drug trafficking haven–where many drugs are further distributed into the country. Located close to Lake Michigan, and with 7 interstate highway systems running through it, the state is ideal for international drug trafficking.

Obviously a great place to visit and live, but Indiana, like all other states, has problems with drug and substance abuse.

Even though Indiana has many high-quality rehabilitation centers, it still ranks 17th in the United States for drug overdoses. Reports show that there are about 20 deaths related to drugs and alcohol per 100,000 people.

Prescription drugs, in particular, are a major problem in Indiana. In 2010, Indiana providers wrote more than 107 prescriptions per 100 people. This decreased to roughly 74 prescriptions per 100 people in 2017–yet remains significantly higher than the national average of 54.7. Indiana continues to rank in the top ten states for opioid prescriptions.

Worst Drugs in Indiana

  1. About 1 in 5 of all substance abuse treatment admissions in Indiana are for marijuana. In 2010, marijuana ranked the most available and most abused substance in the state. The rate of marijuana abuse 10.155, slightly less than the national average of 10.57.
  2. Cocaine is responsible for about 11% of non-opioid-related overdoses in Indiana, while only 2% of the state population above the age of 12 abuse cocaine or crack. Even though the numbers of abuse are relatively low, 4% of all high school students in Indiana admit to having tried cocaine at least once in their life.
  3. Pain killers top the list of most abused prescription opioids in Indiana at more than 22%. About 4 in 5 people get these pills from a family member or a friend which led to the state passing a law limiting first-time prescriptions for opioids to only 7 days’ worth.
  4. Heroin abuse has increased more than 300% in the past decade. More than 9% of Indiana teenagers under the age of 19 have abused heroin at some point in their life. This has led to a higher than average rate of heroin abuse in Indiana.
  5. More than 60% of young adults admit to heavy alcohol use, and more than 40% of those participate in binge drinking. This has led to more than 35% of all substance abuse treatment admissions being for alcohol dependence.

  1. Tobacco use is a big problem in Indiana, with pregnant women accounting for about 15% of all tobacco users.
  2. In 2010, the rate of children abusing alcohol and drugs finally declined after years of consistently rising. Since then, however, the rate of smokeless cigarettes such as vapes in Indiana has increased.
