The Impact of Addiction in Louisiana

Louisiana Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers

Louisiana is the former province of the United States of Spain and France. The nation is a mixture of cultures, ranging from Native American, Spanish , and French. The eclectic combination of culture and vibrant Mardi Gras is renowned in New Orleans. The Tabasco sauce factory in Avery Island has been the world renowned resting spot.

Like other states in the country, Louisiana has also been battling an opioid epidemic. Opioids, both prescription and illicit, are widely available throughout the state. Many residents of Louisiana also die from opioid use and overdose–causing the state to rank amongst the top ten in the nation for opioid-related deaths.

A wonderful place to visit and stay, of course, but Louisiana, sadly, has issues with substance addiction.

Per 100 people, Louisiana prescribers write out 103.2 prescriptions–leading to high levels of use and abuse.T o combat the rate of opioid-related deaths, Louisiana renewed its standing order for naloxone in 2018. Naloxone is a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and can be used for both prescription as well as illicit opioids. This renewed order allows medical personnel to give naloxone to those that overdose on opioids without requiring a prescription.

Louisiana also has a state-wide database in which all medical professionals can see the opioid prescriptions each individual has to their name. Using this system allows professionals to know exactly how much time there is between each prescription. They also have the ability to crosscheck whether the number of pills taken matches the amount prescribed. Louisiana also demands doctors see their patients before prescribing any opioids and pharmacies require identification for opioid prescription pickups.

Louisiana also implemented the HOPE council: the advisory council on Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education. This council strives to educate the residents of Louisiana on the dangers of opioid use and abuse.
