For the past decade, Maryland’s rate of drug use and abuse has significantly increased. The overdose rate is currently higher than the national average, with the state’s average being more than a full percentage point above the national average in many statistics.

There are a lot of things to love about Maryland, but there are also places in Maryland that struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.

This increase in controlled substance use and abuse comes from the many drug trafficking networks that were established in the late ’80s during the crack wave. These traffickers have been expanding since the 2000s, with the largest expansions occurring this past decade.
