Despite the state of Mississippi ranking amongst the lowest in the nation for deaths due to drug and alcohol abuse, the problem is still prevalent within the community. Approximately 350,000 residents use illicit drugs every year while another 108,000 abuse alcohol. These statistics contribute to 5.04% of all deaths in the state caused by either drugs or alcohol. This number is far below the national average of 12.71%.

Clearly are a lot of things to love about Mississippi, but that doesn’t mean it has no drug or alcohol problems.

On the count of prescriptions, however, Mississippi exhibits a rate higher than the national average. In one year, doctors in the state prescribed 76.8 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons, compared to the national rate of 51.4 prescriptions. This places Mississippi as one of the top 10 in the country.

The numbers and reports vary with Mississippi ranking relatively low and relatively high on various drug and alcohol abuse statistics. Overall, however, the state–as well as the entire nation–is seeing an alarmingly dangerous increasing trend in drug and alcohol usage.

Worst Drugs in Mississippi

  1. Alcoholism is a serious issue for the state, with 13.8% of adults in the state binge or chronic drinking. This also affects minors–and between 2017 and 2018, approximately 8.5% of adolescents aged 12-17 reported using alcohol.
  2. Marijuana is the most common reason for patients entering rehabilitation and treatment programs in the state of Mississippi. In 2009, reports show that 1,481 people were admitted for this drug–with 70.4% being male and 29.6% female. While all age groups engage in marijuana (grass, weed, or pot) use in the state, the largest group is reported to be those between 21-25 years old.
  3. Methamphetamine use is not as high as in other parts of the country, however, it is still an issue. The state experienced a 334% increase in methamphetamine lab seizures between the years 2007 to 2009–from 155 to 673 incidents.
  4. In 2018, opioids were the cause of 173 deaths–or roughly 60% of the 310 drug overdoses. And according to a TEDS report from 2009, those admitted for treatment and rehabilitation for substance abuse for opiates(other than heroin) totaled 655.
  5. Mississippi also has its fair share of cocaine use. In 2009, about 259 residents admitted into rehabilitation and treatment cited cocaine use as their primary drug. The majority were male, at 61%.

Impactful Addiction Stats

  1. An average of 11.68% of Mississippi residents uses illegal drugs in a given year.
  2. The state experienced a 37% increase in prescribed amphetamines from 2011 to 2014–and during that same time, the dosage also increased by 41%.
  3. A study in 2019 reported that roughly 13.8% of adults in the state either binge drink or chronic drink. Binge drinking is defined by 5 alcoholic drinks for men and 4 for women on a single occasion while chronic drinking means 8 alcoholic beverages per week for women and 15 for men.
  4. Mississippi rehabilitation and treatment centers admitted 1,244 patients for alcohol dependence in 2009. That same year, an additional 1,368 patients were admitted for alcohol abuse combined with a secondary drug.
  5. Between 2017 and 2018, 5% of Mississippi minors aged 12-17 reported using marijuana. This number is lower than the national average of 6.6%.
  6. Key indicators of drug and substance abuse are mental health and roughly 5.4% of the Mississippi population is afflicted with a serious mental issue.
  7. The rate of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS)/neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), which occurs when women use drugs during pregnancy, is only seen in 2.4 cases per 1,000 hospital births within the state.
  8. In 2007, 334 people died in Mississippi as a direct result of drug use. This number is low compared to those who die from car accidents (914) and those from firearms (535).
  9. The city of Gulfport, Mississippi, had the highest rate of drug and alcohol abuse-related deaths between 2007 and 2018.
