In one year, doctors in the state prescribed 76.8 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons, compared to the national rate of 51.4 prescriptions. This places Mississippi as one of the top 10 in the country.
The numbers and reports vary with Mississippi ranking relatively low and relatively high on various drug and alcohol abuse statistics. Overall, however, the state–as well as the entire nation–is seeing an alarmingly dangerous increasing trend in drug and alcohol usage.

- Alcoholism is a serious issue for the state, with 13.8% of adults in the state binge or chronic drinking. This also affects minors–and between 2017 and 2018, approximately 8.5% of adolescents aged 12-17 reported using alcohol.
- Marijuana is the most common reason for patients entering rehabilitation and treatment programs in the state of Mississippi. In 2009, reports show that 1,481 people were admitted for this drug–with 70.4% being male and 29.6% female. While all age groups engage in marijuana (grass, weed, or pot) use in the state, the largest group is reported to be those between 21-25 years old.
- Methamphetamine use is not as high as in other parts of the country, however, it is still an issue. The state experienced a 334% increase in methamphetamine lab seizures between the years 2007 to 2009–from 155 to 673 incidents.
- In 2018, opioids were the cause of 173 deaths–or roughly 60% of the 310 drug overdoses. And according to a TEDS report from 2009, those admitted for treatment and rehabilitation for substance abuse for opiates(other than heroin) totaled 655.
- Mississippi also has its fair share of cocaine use. In 2009, about 259 residents admitted into rehabilitation and treatment cited cocaine use as their primary drug. The majority were male, at 61%.
