The Impact of Addiction in Montana

Find Drug, Substance, and Alcohol Treatment in Montana

Glacier National Park is a jewel in the crown of Montana, surrounded by giant mountains and ice-covered valleys. Southwestern Montana is the path to another beauty: Yellowstone, the first national park in the country. Head east to the High Plains of Montana, an area of butts, meadows and meandering rivers. Big Sky and Whitefish are up there with the best, but invite the locals to explore the tiny, low-key hills.

Despite being known as one of the most beautiful states with breathtaking scenery and more wildlife than any other, there is a dark side to Montana. The drug epidemic has not left the state behind–in fact, some years Montana experiences the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the nation. Although the total population is less than a million, it is estimated that roughly 280,000 of its residents engage in drug or alcohol abuse in any given year. This substance problem has resulted in 1 in 10 Montana residents exhibiting a drug or alcohol dependency.

Montana has a lot to enjoy, but there are many areas in Montana that struggle with addiction to narcotics and alcohol.

Not only is this problem present in adults, but Montana’s minors are also experiencing a fair share of the epidemic. Statistics show that the state consistently ranks higher in drug and alcohol use among minors when compared to the rest of the United States. Marijuana, in particular, is heavily used among high school students. Despite these daunting trends, the state is grappling with the issue head-on. Education and awareness, in addition to accessible rehabilitation treatment, are necessary to fight this matter.

Worst Drugs in Montana

  1. Marijuana is one of the worst drugs in Montana due to its prevalence amongst those ages 12 to 17 years old. A staggering 29.5% of minors in this age group are dependent on this drug in weed, pot, or grass form. It is also the most cited drug for patients seeking treatment and rehabilitation.
  2. Montana’s rates of alcohol use and dependence are consistently higher than the national average. Approximately 20% of residents admit to binge drinking or chronic drinking in the past month while roughly 8% are considered heavy drinkers. The national average is 6.2%, putting Montana almost 2 percentage points higher.
  3. Prescription drug use is seeing an increasing trend in the country, and that includes Montana. From a report in 2018, doctors wrote 54 prescriptions for opioids for every 100 persons, compared to the rate of 51.4 in the rest of the nation. The state is also experiencing an increase in deaths involving synthetic opioids, such as Fentanyl, with more than 28,400 overdose deaths in 2018.
  4. Heroin is also showing an increasing trend in Montana with approximately 3,000 adult residents using the drug between 2015 and 2016. Additionally, the Montana State Crime Lab noticed a 475% increase in heroin use over 4 years.
  5. Although not as common as other drugs, methamphetamine use is also found in the state. In fact, between 2015 and 2016, hospitals reported an increase in meth-related deaths and hospitalizations. This trend goes hand in hand with the Montana police force seeing an increase in meth-related crimes.
