In 2015, Nevada ranked 4th in the nation for drug overdoses. More than 600 people died due to drug abuse that year and almost 70% of those overdoses were opioid-related. Between 2007 and 2008, Nevada ranked in the top ten states in the nation for different categories of drug abuse, such as the use of pain relievers for non-medical reasons. The state also ranks amongst the top ten states for the highest rates of alcohol abuse.

To combat the drug problem in Nevada, the state has adopted several laws. The syringe access laws, for example, are an attempt to prevent the sharing of needles between drug users. The state also legalized medical marijuana in 2001, and in 2017 the recreational use of marijuana was also legalized.

  1. One in four residents of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area participates in binge drinking every month and more than 200,000 Nevada residents over the age of 12 years are dependent on alcohol.
  2. Due to the many prescription opioid-related overdoses, Nevada adopted a prescription monitoring program. Regardless, opioids continue to pose a major drug problem with heroin-related overdoses quadrupling between 2002 and 2013. Of those addicted to heroin, more than 45% are also addicted to pain killers.
  3. More than 35% of all high school students admit to having used marijuana at least once in their lifetime. The largest group of marijuana-abuse treatment admissions in Nevada are between the ages of 12 and 17, which signifies high rates of use in younger age groups.
  4. Methamphetamines are the most commonly abused drug in Nevada. In 2015, methamphetamine-related overdoses reached an all-time high when more than 200 people died due to the abuse of methamphetamines.
  5. While cocaine abuse is less prevalent in Nevada than it is in the rest of the United States, almost 7% of high school students in Nevada start using cocaine each year.
