Between 2007 and 2008, Nevada ranked in the top ten states in the nation for different categories of drug abuse, such as the use of pain relievers for non-medical reasons. The state also ranks amongst the top ten states for the highest rates of alcohol abuse.

To combat the drug problem in Nevada, the state has adopted several laws. The syringe access laws, for example, are an attempt to prevent the sharing of needles between drug users. The state also legalized medical marijuana in 2001, and in 2017 the recreational use of marijuana was also legalized.
