The Impact of Addiction in New Jersey

New Jersey Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities

New Jersey is a compact territory divided by the Hudson River from New York. It is lined in busy cities, hedonistic seaside towns and excellent beaches. Atlantic City is a form of Vegas by the sea, with its palatial casinos and swirling arcades. Newark and Hoboken offer a variety of cultural attractions, leafy parks and civil war grounds.

The state of New Jersey is afflicted by the rising opioid overdose crisis as well as the increase in the number of residents engaging in illegal substance abuse. Located between Pennsylvania and New York, the state is situated in the direct path of what is known as the “Crossroads of the East.” This corridor is responsible for most of the trafficking of illicit drugs in the general area. As a result, the vast illegal drug scene has made it challenging for the state to control the ensuing number of crimes and deaths.

Clearly there are a lot of things New Jersey to enjoy, but that does not mean New Jersey is without drug issues.

Over 1.1 million New Jersey residents reportedly use drugs in a given year while another 358,000 residents abuse alcohol. The high prevalence of drug and alcohol abuse caused 14% of all deaths in the state between 2008 and 2017. Furthermore, the state experienced an increase in drug overdoses of more than 40% between 2015 and 2016. According to New Jersey Advance Media, more than 2,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2016 alone. Among the three most densely populated cities in New Jersey, Jersey City had the highest rate of drug-and alcohol-related deaths, while Newark had the lowest.
