Due to the numerous ports and intricate transportation infrastructure, drugs can easily be trafficked into New York– and on toward other states for further distribution. While substance abuse has been declining in the New York City metropolitan area, the rates remain higher than average when compared to the rest of the United States of America. Over 2 million New Yorkers are currently suffering from some type of substance abuse and many of those are minors. Alcohol abuse, in particular, is prevalent among those underage. It is estimated that roughly 15% of all teens in New York begin drinking before the age of 13.

It is reported that in total about a million adult New Yorkers struggle with alcohol abuse while nearly half a million residents admit to using hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin.

As a result of the high prices and regulation of prescription drugs, many New Yorkers turn to heroin instead. This has led to a serious heroin epidemic in the state.

  1. Heroin was the most cited drug among drug users admitted for treatment in 2010 in the state of New York. The abuse reached an all-time high in 2014 when almost 80,000 individuals were admitted for heroin abuse in the state alone.
  2. Almost 400,000 adult New Yorkers admit to abusing cocaine at least once in their lifetime. It is also the drug most often associated with violent crime in New York and is largely supplied by Colombian-based distributors.
  3. Primary treatment admissions for marijuana abuse in New York represent a quarter of all drug abuse treatment admissions. The use of this drug has become so common in New York that half of all male arrestees test positive for marijuana in their system.
  4. Prescription drug-related deaths quadrupled between the years 2005 and 2014. However, New York has one of the lowest rates of prescription drugs, with only 34 per 100 people given a prescription, compared to the national average of 51.4 per 100 people.
  5. Binge drinking is one of the largest problems in New York, with over half the population engaging in this at least once a month. This has led to New York having an alcohol dependency of about 6.6%, which translates to about 1.1 million New Yorkers.
