North Dakota is one of the least affected states when it comes to drugs. The state has one of the lowest rates of drug addiction in the country, ranking at 47th place. Even though the rate of addiction is low, it has been increasing in recent years.

While the rates of abuse for other drugs have been rising, the rate of prescription drug abuse has been decreasing over the past 15 years. In 2011, 6.5% of North Dakota residents used prescription drugs in non-medical situations. In 2015, this number had lowered to just 4.9%.

Despite these drugs being readily available in North Dakota, the most commonly abused substance in the Peach Garden state is alcohol. It is reported that 5.26% of the population abuses alcohol in a year, which includes several minors. Binge drinking is a large problem, with 24.8% of the population taking part. This is almost eight full points above the national average of 16.9%. This number has led to many drunk drivers on the road which has increased drunk driving fatalities. Almost half of all road deaths in North Dakota are tied to alcohol.

North Dakota has taken several measures to decrease substance abuse and raise awareness about the consequences. One important program is the Substance Use Disorder Voucher. The program was set up to give financial support to those seeking substance abuse treatment in North Dakota. Since its establishment, the program has put over 3,500 residents through treatment.

  1. Alcohol abuse is a problem among minors in North Dakota. Around 18% of students from 9th through 12th grade admit to binge drinking. These minors gain access to alcohol through friends and family–however, many have been able to buy it at establishments. Half of all bartenders in North Dakota admit to having served alcohol to those who are underage.
  2. Marijuana has become the most commonly cited drug of choice in treatment admissions in North Dakota. While this is concerning, the most alarming factor is that the largest group of those admitted were between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. In 2013 alone, around 6,600 people over the age of 12 tried marijuana for the first time.
  3. Methamphetamine use in North Dakota increased by almost 100% between 2012 and 2015. Methamphetamine abuse in the state is particularly common among those incarcerated. Over 80% of all women in North Dakota prisons were arrested for meth-related offenses and 60% of the men in prison are regular methamphetamine users.
  4. Prescription drug abuse is still very common among minors. Over 14% of North Dakota high schoolers admit to having abused prescription drugs at least once in their lifetime.
  5. While the rate of opioid-related overdoses in North Dakota is low when compared to others, eight per 100,000 people die from opioid overdoses each year. In 2017, half of all reported overdoses in North Dakota involved opioids.
