It is reported that 5.26% of the population abuses alcohol in a year, which includes several minors. Binge drinking is a large problem, with 24.8% of the population taking part. This is almost eight full points above the national average of 16.9%. This number has led to many drunk drivers on the road which has increased drunk driving fatalities. Almost half of all road deaths in North Dakota are tied to alcohol.

North Dakota has taken several measures to decrease substance abuse and raise awareness about the consequences. One important program is the Substance Use Disorder Voucher.
