Oregon’s drug abuse rates are higher when compared to other states in the country. Each year, more than 1.1 million Oregonians–roughly 26% of the population–take part in using drugs. These residents use a wide variety of drugs, some legal and some illicit, which open the door to a full range of health issues. Drug and alcohol-related problems have become increasingly popular throughout the state–resulting in Oregon currently ranking 5th in the nation for drug-related health issues.

Drugs are not the only substances abused in Oregon. Alcohol abuse in the state is also higher than average; over 6.25% of the residents abuse alcohol every year. Those who admit themselves are often addicted to alcohol–resulting in alcohol being the leading substance of choice in substance treatment admissions.

Alcohol and drug use in Oregon is also common among minors. More than 12% of minors above the age of 12 years old report drinking alcohol at least once a month. Marijuana as well as prescription opioids are among the top drugs most often abused by teenagers in the state.

While there are several reasons for the high rates of substance abuse in Oregon, the largest problem was the lack of access to substance abuse treatment. At one point in time, the state ranked 50th in the nation for access to rehabilitation centers. This has improved in recent years through setting up different types of treatment centers throughout the state. Additionally, Oregon started several outreach programs to educate its residents on the consequences of substance abuse. Despite this progress, the state still has an untreated addiction rate of almost 10%.

Worst Drugs in Oregon

  1. More than 200,000 people in Oregon struggle with alcohol addiction. Since alcohol can lead to several health problems, 5 Oregonians die from alcohol-related issues everyday.
  2. Like other states in the country, Oregon is battling an opioid epidemic. Oregon healthcare workers prescribe more than 66 opioid prescriptions per 100 people. Many of those whose prescriptions are canceled then switch to heroin and fentanyl–causing an increase in both fentanyl and heroin-related overdoses.
  3. In 2016 alone, there were more than 140 meth-related deaths in Oregon. This is three times higher than the number of meth-related deaths throughout the state in 2012. Meth-related seizures in Oregon have increased by more than 800% from 2010 to 2018–and continue to increase.
  4. In 2014, the government legalized the recreational use of marijuana in Oregon. Those under the age of 21 are still prohibited from using the drug, but the legalization has made the drug more accessible than ever before. Even before the legalization, Oregon had the 2nd highest rate of marijuana use in the country.
  5. Every year, more than 12,000 Oregonians try heroin for the first time. This has caused heroin to be the second-leading cause of overdoses in the state at 16%. Heroin seizures have also been increasing steadily for years, with an increase of more than 900% since 2007.

  1. Adolescents in Oregon use both marijuana and alcohol at a higher rate than the average adolescent in the United States. Both of these substances are used by around 10% of all adolescents in the state.
  2. Two out of 3 Oregonians have a friend or a family member who suffers from addiction.
  3. Almost half of all those in Oregon battling addiction struggle with both alcohol and drug addiction.
  4. Since the rate of both drug and alcohol abuse in Oregon is higher than the national average, so is the rate of alcohol and/or drug-related deaths in the state. This rate is 21.34% which is higher than the national average of 12.71%.
  5. Oregon ranks 4th in the nation for non-medical use of prescription opioids.
  6. Binge drinking is a major problem in Oregon, especially amongst the youth. It is estimated that 16.5% of 11th graders and 15% of adults in the state binge drink regularly.
  7. One out of every 10 Oregonians suffers from some sort of substance addiction.
  8. Cocaine abuse has declined in recent years. Since 2008, the number of cocaine-related treatment admissions has gone down by 80%.
  9. In 2010, a little over 8,000 people were admitted to treatment centers in Oregon for marijuana dependence. More than 40% of those were between the ages of 12 and 17 years old.
  10. It is estimated that around 530 people in Oregon die each year due to a drug overdose.
