Approximately 21.27% of the Rhode Island population uses illegal drugs in a given year. While illegal drug use is a major problem in the state, alcohol abuse is an equally troublesome issue. Roughly 5.86% of residents abuse alcohol in a given year and the state ranks third in the nation for death caused by alcohol poisoning. Between 2008 and 2017, 16.8% of all deaths in the state were caused by either drugs or alcohol.

  1. Heroin is one of the most abused drugs in the state. In 2010, 1,993 people were admitted to drug addiction treatment programs in Rhode Island for heroin. In 2014, 80% of all drug crimes investigated by police in the city of Providence involved heroin.
  2. Marijuana is another top drug of choice by state residents. In 2010, 1,577 individuals entered substance abuse treatment for marijuana addiction. Rhode Island ranked among the states with the highest rate of marijuana use across all age groups.
  3. Cocaine is also on the list of worst drugs in Rhode Island. The state was among the top in the nation with the highest rates of cocaine use among three age groups: 12 -17, 18-25, and 26-30. In 2010, 869 people were admitted for cocaine addiction treatment.
  4. Synthetic and prescription opioids (OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin) are contributing massively to the state’s addiction problems and fatality rates. In 2010, 1,323 individuals sought treatment for the use of opiates other than heroin. In the same year, 18-25-year-olds led prescription drug abuse in Rhode Island. In 2016, Rhode Island’s opioid-related fatality rate was more than double the national rate.
  5. Since 1992, alcohol abuse treatment admissions have been on the decline from 53% to 29%. However, alcohol consumption is higher than the U.S. average, particularly among 18-25 year-olds. Men comprised the majority of those who abused alcohol either as a primary drug or alcohol with a secondary substance.
