The Impact of Addiction in South Dakota

Drug Treatment Facilities in South Dakota

The Black Hills are the crowning glory of the county, boasting a network of national parks , museums and memorials. Mount Rushmore is home to the tallest rock sculpture in the world, Mad Horse. The Missouri River draws cyclists, bikers, kayakers and anglers who have walleye, pike and perch hooks. South Dakota is also a major hunting spot, and the gourmet game is likely to be at the top of the Sioux Falls menu.

Although South Dakota is a sparsely populated and somewhat isolated state, it is equally impacted by the national drug epidemic. Substance abuse remains a significant issue that leads to injuries and deaths every year. Currently, the state ranks 44th in the nation for substance abuse, though it comes in at 18 for drug-related health issues.

South Dakota is a great place to visit and live, of course, but it does have drug abuse problems like all other states.

Around 12.14% of the state population uses illegal drugs and another 6.01% of the state population abuse alcohol in a given year. As a result, 17.27% of aldeaths between 2008 and 2017 were drug and alcohol-related. The South Dakota Department of Health reports that for the past several years, more than 300 people were hospitalized annually due to issues involving drug abuse.

Fortunately, a variety of substance abuse treatment programs are available within the state to help individuals eliminate drugs from their lives and avoid relapse. Lawmakers have prioritized tackling the drug epidemic head-on. The South Dakota Department of Social Services created a campaign against methamphetamine use, called ‘Meth Changes Everything’ while lawmakers work with hospitals and physicians to develop new legislation in an attempt to regulate the prescribing of opioid painkillers.
