The state of Virginia, located in the middle of the country and on the Atlantic coast, has been struggling with substance use and abuse like the rest of the United States. While this region ranks second place for drug-related deaths in the nation, Virginia’s rate of drug abuse is below average.

There is definitely a lot to love about Virginia, but drug addiction and alcohol misuse plague some places.

A little over 10% of the entire Virginia population uses drugs and almost 5% abuse alcohol every given year. This has led to almost 6.5% of all deaths in Virginia being somehow related to alcohol and/or drugs. While this rate is far below the national average, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction are still serious problems throughout the state.

In recent years, opioid abuse has become a serious problem in Virginia–and this epidemic has taken many Virginian lives and continues to do so. Not only do many people die from opioid use, but several residents also experience serious long-term medical problems as a consequence. More than 7,000 Virginia residents visit the emergency room for opioid-related reasons.

Illicit drugs are not the only cause for concern in Virginia. It is reported that alcohol and/or tobacco use are quite common among students. More than 45% of all students in Virginia admit to regular tobacco use while over 60% of all high school students admit to trying alcohol at least once. As a result of these rates, the state has implemented various laws and programs to raise awareness in an effort to prevent the further abuse of these substances. The state also continuously improves its treatment centers and prevention programs which has led to ranking in the top one-third in the country for its effectiveness of statewide substance abuse programs.

  1. Cocaine, listed as the primary drug threat in Virginia, is the drug most often associated with violent crimes throughout the state.
  2. In 2009, heroin was the third most popular drug for people admitted to rehabilitation centers in Virginia. While the drug no longer ranks in the top three, there are still many cases of heroin abuse throughout the state.
  3. Marijuana abuse in Virginia is most often found amongst its younger residents. The two largest groups entering treatment for marijuana abuse are those between the ages of 12 and 17 years old and those between 21 and 25. While these rates are incredibly high, minors in Virginia still use marijuana at a lower rate than the average minor in the United States.
  4. Opioids, other than heroin, are also causing significant damage in Virginia. It has been reported that synthetic-opioid-related deaths are more than 7.5 times more common now than they were in 2010.
  5. Alcohol use and abuse is a major problem in Virginia, especially among minors. A survey conducted in 2015 revealed that almost 8% of all middle schoolers start using alcohol before the age of 11. Despite this statistic, Virginia does not rank high for alcohol-related deaths with only 3 deaths per 100,000 people being related to the substance.
