The Impact of Addiction in West Virginia

West Virginia Drug Addiction Treatment Centers

The self-styled ‘Outdoor Capital of the East’ provides a real A to Z adrenaline-packed outdoor adventure. The state boasts white-water rapids, underwater caves and the Appalachian Mountains. Offers all-terrain vehicle drives on one of the biggest off-road roads in the world. The Monongahela National Forest covers the highest peaks of the state and is dotted with campgrounds.

In recent years, alcohol and drug abuse in West Virginia has become so troubling that it has been called an epidemic by the medical community. While the state government has attempted to address this crisis, the situation hasn’t changed; in fact, it has become worse over the years.

Clearly there are a lot of things West Virginia to enjoy, but that does not mean West Virginia is without drug issues.

West Virginia ranks first in the entire nation for drug overdoses and the amount of overdoses is sometimes twice that of the United States’s average. More than 100,000 residents are dependent on drugs and alcohol. Many of those are minors who have been influenced by addicted parents to start using drugs and alcohol at a young age.

The state also ranks first in opioid-related overdoses. For every 100 people, doctors wrote 110 prescriptions. Because of the many prescribed opioids, the rate of opioid-related overdoses is currently at about 49 deaths per 100,000 people. This number is more than twice the national average rate of opioid overdoses.

Worst Drugs in West Virginia

  1. Since West Virginia ranks as the state with the highest rate of opioid prescriptions, it is not surprising that opioids were linked to more than 90% of all overdoses. However, less than 45% of those that overdosed actually had prescriptions for the opioid found in their system.
  2. While methamphetamines are widely available in West Virginia, the authorities have made efforts to reduce the manufacturing of meth in the state. The treatment admissions for methamphetamines also do not reflect the true abuse in the state since methamphetamines are rarely the addict’s drug of choice.
  3. Due to its availability, cocaine abuse is also common in West Virginia. More than 40,000 residents abuse this drug in some form every year. Therefore, the state ranks among the top ten in the nation for cocaine abuse in those between 18 and 25 years old.
  4. Marijuana has been a problem in West Virginia for quite some time now. More than 9% of the population abuses marijuana every single year, and about 35% of teenagers have used it at least once in their life.
  5. While the alcohol abuse rates in West Virginia are lower than the national average, more than 12% of the adult population participate in binge drinking and/or chronic drinking every year.

Impactful Addiction Stats

  5. Due to the high rates of alcohol and drug use, all high school students in West Virginia are required to take a drug awareness and prevention course.
  6. Even though drug overdoses have increased in West Virginia, the number of substance abuse treatment admissions has stayed relatively constant during the past decade.
  7. Of all students in West Virginia, more than 8% had tried marijuana before the age of 13.
  8. Almost 40% of all students who drink alcohol admit to either elders or fellow students supplying it for them.
