Each year, approximately 13.56% of the state population uses illegal drugs, and another 5.83% abuse alcohol. Consequently, 17.32% of all deaths between 2008 and 2017 were drug and alcohol-related–a statistic more than 4.5% points above the national average.

In 2010, a reported 2,817 residents were admitted for marijuana dependence treatment.
