The state ranks second in the United States of America for residents with substance abuse disorders. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), since 2004 the state of Oklahoma continuously exceeds the national standard of substance abuse cases. Statistics show that approximately 12.7% of the state population uses illegal drugs and another 4.9% of the state population abuse alcohol in a given year.

A wonderful place to visit and stay, of course, but Oklahoma, sadly, has issues with substance addiction.

Reports show that Oklahoma experiences the fastest growth of residents developing a prescription drug problem. In 2010, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health Reports announced that the state led the nation with over 8% of 12-year-olds and older teens using and abusing non-prescribed painkillers. Annually, Oklahoma is also pronounced to be the number one state for prescribed painkillers. As a result, 14.21% of all deaths in Oklahoma between 2008 and 2017 were caused by drugs and alcohol.

In 2017, Oklahoma spent more than $37 million to combat addiction by investing in quality drug and alcohol addiction treatment. The state offers several rehabilitation programs to help set individuals on the path to recovery. However, an estimated 600 to 800 people are on waiting lists each day for inpatient addiction treatment.

  1. Many research studies show that the state mainly struggles with drugs such as methamphetamine and opioids–and these substances cause the highest rate of overdose in Oklahoma. Methamphetamine remains one of the largest drugs in the state overall. In 2009, 2,965 individuals received treatment for amphetamine addiction.
  2. During 2007-2008, Oklahoma ranked first among all states for the number of people using pain relievers for non-medical use–especially among those ages 12 and older. In 2009, 1,533 individuals went to drug rehabilitation for opiates other than heroin. Popular opioids abused include OxyContin and Vicodin.
  3. Similar to other states, alcohol is one of the main substances abused by Oklahoma residents. According to statistics, 30% of residents choose alcohol as their first choice. America’s Health Rankings Annual Report on Binge Drinking found that 20.7% of Oklahoma residents ages 18-44 participated in binge drinking in 2017 alone.
  4. Cocaine belongs on the list of the top five drugs abused in Oklahoma. There were a reported 817 people who entered drug addiction treatment in 2009 for smoking cocaine and another 309 people who were admitted for ingesting cocaine by other means.
  5. Lastly, marijuana is also frequently abused. In 2009, 3,675 people were admitted to treatment for marijuana dependence. Of that number, 22.1% of those were aged 21-25.

Impactful Addiction Stats

  1. A recent survey involving over 10,000 students showed that: 44% reported marijuana use, 11% reported methamphetamine use, 9% reported cocaine use, and 2% reported heroin use.
  2. Of all the Oklahoma drug overindulgence deaths reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse in 2018, 308 fatalities involved opioid overdose (both prescribed and non-prescribed).
  3. While Oklahoma’s deaths involving opioid prescriptions declined from 251 in 2017 to 172 in 2018, the state’s opioid prescription was higher than the average U.S. rate of 51.4 per 100 persons during the year.
