The Impact of Addiction in Oregon
It’s home to the continent’s only year-round skiing. The Heathman Hotel was the setting for some of Grey’s most memorable Fifty Shades scenes. The Painted Hills are known for their kaleidoscopic layers of red, ochre and black. The best way to explore the area is to ride Mt Hood, kite-surf on the Hood River or ski in the Cascade Mountains. The snow-capped volcanoes and snow-capped peaks of the state are a must-see stop on this journey.
Oregon’s drug abuse rates are higher when compared to other states in the country. Each year, more than 1.1 million Oregonians–roughly 26% of the population–take part in using drugs. These residents use a wide variety of drugs, some legal and some illicit, which open the door to a full range of health issues. Drug and alcohol-related problems have become increasingly popular throughout the state–resulting in Oregon currently ranking 5th in the nation for drug-related health issues.
There is a lot to love about Oregon, but there are also areas in Oregon dealing with drug and alcohol dependency.
Drugs are not the only substances abused in Oregon. Alcohol abuse in the state is also higher than average; over 6.25% of the residents abuse alcohol every year. While there are several reasons for the high rates of substance abuse in Oregon, the largest problem was the lack of access to substance abuse treatment. At one point in time, the state ranked 50th in the nation for access to rehabilitation centers. This has improved in recent years through setting up different types of treatment centers throughout the state. Additionally, Oregon started several outreach programs to educate its residents on the consequences of substance abuse.
