The use of alcohol is still a major problem in Kentucky. A little over 11% of the Kentucky population abuses alcohol in a given year which translates to about 340,000 residents. Of these, more than 160,000 meet the DSM criteria for alcohol dependence. Due to the high numbers of alcohol abuse and dependence, there have been years in which more than 98% of all substance abuse treatment admissions in Kentucky were somehow alcohol-related.
