Per 100 people, Louisiana prescribers write out 103.2 prescriptions–leading to high levels of use and abuse.T o combat the rate of opioid-related deaths, Louisiana renewed its standing order for naloxone in 2018. Naloxone is a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and can be used for both prescription as well as illicit opioids. This renewed order allows medical personnel to give naloxone to those that overdose on opioids without requiring a prescription.

Louisiana also has a state-wide database in which all medical professionals can see the opioid prescriptions each individual has to their name. Using this system allows professionals to know exactly how much time there is between each prescription. They also have the ability to crosscheck whether the number of pills taken matches the amount prescribed. Louisiana also demands doctors see their patients before prescribing any opioids and pharmacies require identification for opioid prescription pickups.

Louisiana also implemented the HOPE council: the advisory council on Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education. This council strives to educate the residents of Louisiana on the dangers of opioid use and abuse.

  2. Heroin is the most commonly abused substance in Louisiana. Most of the heroin in Louisiana comes from Miami and Houston and is then distributed further into the state. The heroin found in Louisiana also has some of the highest purity levels–sometimes going as high as 45%.
  3. For years, marijuana has been the third most commonly abused substance in Louisiana among minors and adults. It is also the second most commonly named substance of choice in drug treatment admissions in Louisiana.
  4. More than 225,000 Louisiana residents admit to regular heavy drinking and around 6% of the Louisiana population abuses alcohol. Of those addicted, only 7% of those who abuse the substance receive the treatment they needed.
  5. While only around 6% of all substance abuse treatment admissions are for cocaine, it is still a drug widely abused in Louisiana. The largest group of cocaine addicts are between the ages of 21 and 25 years old. Slightly over 4.75% of that age group and almost 50,000 people over the age of 26 actively use cocaine in the state.
