The Impact of Addiction in Utah

Utah Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities

Beehive State National Parks are a maze of wind-sculpted canyons, checkerboard cliff faces and cliff arches. Take a spin down Heritage Highway 89 for a taste of classic Americana, then saddle up at a dude ranch. See the backcountry for untracked snow and a rollercoaster tree in the Wasatch Mountains. Salt Lake City is home to state-of-the-art museums, lively student and LGBT communities, and lined bars. The state’s claim to have ‘the best snow on earth’ means you can ski in the state ‘s renowned Wasatch Mountains.

While Utah only ranks 45th in the nation for overall drug abuse, substance abuse and addiction remain a challenge for the state. More than 500 residents lose their life each year from the effects of drug abuse and/or addiction–and almost all of these deaths are unintentional.

Utah has a lot to enjoy, but there are many areas in Utah that struggle with addiction to narcotics and alcohol.

Substance abuse rates in Utah have seen an upward trend in recent years for a variety of drugs. This has led to the government implementing different laws and prevention programs in an effort to keep these rates stable.

In 2014, Utah officials created a Good Samaritan Law to protect drug users who report possible overdoses from being prosecuted themselves. In that same year, Utah also implemented a law allowing participating pharmacies to dispense the life-saving drug naloxone to those who need it. This drug can save lives by reversing the effects of opioid overdoses.

Prescription opioid abuse especially poses a problem in Utah. The majority of residents are Mormons and are therefore forbidden to use drugs and alcohol. This results in higher consumption of prescription drugs which are then used for non-medical purposes. Consequently, this trend has led to the state ranking among the top 10 in the nation for prescription drug overdoses.

Worst Drugs in Utah

  1. Heroin abuse has become common in Utah due to people switching from prescription drugs to heroin as a result of lower prices and wider availability.
  2. Utah ranks 7th for prescription drug abuse and addiction in the nation. The abuse has increased by more than 400% since 2000. This is partly due to the increase in prescriptions–as Utah providers write out more than 63 prescriptions per 100 people.
  3. Utah has some of the highest rates for methamphetamine use and production in the nation–ranking 7th for overall meth use. However, the state ranks quite low for methamphetamine distribution.
  4. Marijuana is one of the most commonly abused drugs in the state. More than 2,500 people are admitted to treatment centers each year for marijuana abuse. The largest age group for those admitted is between 12 and 17 years old, at more than 42%. However, the rate of marijuana abuse for adolescents in Utah is much lower than the national average.
  5. Slightly over 3.75% of the total Utah population abuses alcohol each year. Alcohol use is also common among those underage with more than 10% of all Utah high school students reporting drinking alcohol before they turned 13 years old. Surveys showed that nearly half were given alcohol by a friend or family member.

Impactful Addiction Stats

  1. While the rate in Utah is not worse than the overall rate of the United States, Utah ranks in the top 10 states for cocaine abuse. Most of these cocaine abusers are under the age of 30.
  2. Between 2013 and 2015, Utah ranked 7th in the country for deaths related to alcohol and/or drugs.
  3. Only 10% of all addicts in Utah receive the substance abuse treatment they need.
  4. Each year, a little over 2,000 Utah residents seek treatment for heroin abuse. This number is increasing due to the strict control regulations on prescription drugs all over the country.
  5. The rate of drug/alcohol-induced deaths in Utah is almost 2 full points higher than the national average, at 14.6 compared to 12.7.
  6. Every year, opioids are involved in almost 70% of all drug-related deaths in the state. This includes heroin, prescription opioids, and Fentanyl.
  7. Teenagers in Utah abuse drugs and alcohol at almost the same rate as other teenagers across the United States. Over 3% of these teens use recreational drugs while almost 7% use pain relievers for non-medical uses.
  8. Mental health issues also pose a problem in Utah which has led to drug and alcohol use. More than 60% of those abusing prescription drugs in the state also have mental health problems.
  9. Over 15% of those currently abusing prescription drugs in Utah previously had a drug abuse problem. These people also recovered but then relapsed with new prescriptions.
  10. Alcohol and marijuana are the most commonly abused drugs by teenagers throughout the state.
