The Impact of Addiction in Arizona

Arizona Drug and Substance Treatment

The Grand Canyon is a major draw for the state, but there’s more to Arizona than the famous canyon. The south and west of the state offer spectacular deserts with beautiful rock formations and Native American tribes. Phoenix is the busy state capital, while Tucson is a trendy, culturally vibrant city. To experience the Wild West, travel to the popular border town of Tombstone or visit the re-enactments of the shooting of OK Corral. The north of the state is crossed by mountain streams and canyons, while the south and west offer eye-catching deserts.

Statistics show that the state of Arizona has higher levels of both alcohol and illicit drug abuse than the rest of the nation. The drug and alcohol abuse problem resulted in over 18,000 state residents seeking addiction treatment services in 2010 alone. Among these people, 60.8% were male while the remaining 39.2% were female. Unfortunately, the number of individuals in Arizona struggling with substance abuse has not improved significantly in recent years.

Of course a nice place to visit and live, but Arizona has drug abuse problems.

From 2000 to 2007, Arizona reported a doubling in the rate of fatalities arising from alcohol abuse. Similarly, marijuana seizures increased dramatically throughout the state. In 2010, there were 18,572 people admitted into drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. The rates of drug-related overdose deaths in the state have also been rising over the past few years. In 2017, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey declared a statewide public health emergency in response to the state’s alarming increase in opioid-related fatalities. He created an emergency helpline in Arizona to respond to the rising cases being reported in the state.

Arizona has a total of over 200 centers that offer recovery help for those struggling with a substance use disorder. Of these centers, 45 offer help for opioid use disorders while roughly 61 provide residential or inpatient care for their addicted clients. Other steps that have been implemented to address substance abuse include needle exchange programs, overdose reversal medications, and community awareness programs.
