The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), reports that the state has been making efforts to suppress drug-related problems. For example, in order to combat addiction problems, the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program is in effect to monitor controlled substances.   2. Marijuana is the most widely available as well as the most widely used illicit drug in the state of Illinois. A 2006 study showed that cannabis use is particularly prevalent among high school students, with 36% of 12th graders reporting lifetime marijuana use to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) while 14.5% of 8th graders report lifetime use.
  3. Alcohol ranks third in Illinois of substances abused. In 2009, 12,430 people were admitted for alcohol addiction in the state. However, when alcohol is combined with a secondary drug, the total number admitted with alcohol adds an additional 10,506 residents.
  4. Cocaine is also on the list of commonly abused substances in Illinois. In 2009, reports showed that 9,058 people were admitted to drug treatment for using cocaine. Roughly 5% of high school students reported using the substance more than once in their lifetime.
  5. Prescription opioids are also abused statewide. About 40,000 people aged 12 to 17 admitted to using prescription opioids for nonmedical reasons in the past year. The most popularly abused pharmaceuticals are hydrocodone products.
