While Indiana only ranks 14th in the nation for drug abuse, drugs are still a major concern for the state. Located close to Lake Michigan, and with 7 interstate highway systems running through it, the state is ideal for international drug trafficking.

Prescription drugs, in particular, are a major problem in Indiana. In 2010, Indiana providers wrote more than 107 prescriptions per 100 people. This decreased to roughly 74 prescriptions per 100 people in 2017–yet remains significantly higher than the national average of 54.7. Indiana continues to rank in the top ten states for opioid prescriptions.

  1. About 1 in 5 of all substance abuse treatment admissions in Indiana are for marijuana. In 2010, marijuana ranked the most available and most abused substance in the state. The rate of marijuana abuse 10.155, slightly less than the national average of 10.57.
  2. Cocaine is responsible for about 11% of non-opioid-related overdoses in Indiana, while only 2% of the state population above the age of 12 abuse cocaine or crack. Even though the numbers of abuse are relatively low, 4% of all high school students in Indiana admit to having tried cocaine at least once in their life.
  3. Pain killers top the list of most abused prescription opioids in Indiana at more than 22%. About 4 in 5 people get these pills from a family member or a friend which led to the state passing a law limiting first-time prescriptions for opioids to only 7 days’ worth.
