The Impact of Addiction in Michigan

Michigan Drug Rehab and Inpatient Alcohol Rehabs

Michigan has more natural characteristics than she knows what to do with it. The state is divided into two peninsulas, separated by Lake Michigan, and connected by one of the longest suspension bridges in the world across the Mackinac Straits. There are more than 5,000 miles of coastline and 11,000 freshwater lakes, as well as 120,000 hectares of sand dunes. Cosmopolitan Grand Rapids is an ultra-cool city with a vibrant art scene, farm-to – fork dining and craft breweries.

Michigan has the second-highest rate of drug and alcohol abuse in the nation. In 2018, the state ranked fourth–but in the following year, the Great Lake State jumped to second and has remained there since.

Obviously there’s a lot to love about Michigan, but some of these places are being ravaged by drug and alcohol addiction.

Similar to other states in the country, Michigan is fighting an opioid epidemic. For over two decades, opioid-related overdoses in the state have seen a devastating upward trend: an 18-fold increase in opioid deaths from 2011 to 2018. Opioids alone are responsible for almost 20% of all drug overdose deaths in Michigan.

To combat opioids abuse, Michigan implemented a law in 2017 giving medical providers access to naloxone: a medicine that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. More than 60% of pharmacies throughout the state have registered to dispense naloxone to those who need it without requiring a prescription.

A major part of the drug problem in Michigan is the wide availability and ease of access. Both alcohol and prescription opioids are readily available and can be obtained legally. The high rates of illicit drug use suggest that illicit drugs are also easily accessible. Many of the drugs coming into the state are imported via the Canadian border as well as trafficked in from other states in the country. Michigan–due to its strategic location–is an ideal drug distribution hub.

Worst Drugs in Michigan

  1. Heroin poses the most dangerous drug threat in Michigan. Every year, more than 25,000 people are admitted into drug treatment centers for heroin abuse. The drug is also threatening Michigan’s public health: it is reported that heroin is linked to more than 50% of the state’s hepatitis C cases.
  2. Binge drinking is also common in Michigan. One in five people in the state participate in binge drinking–and they do so about five times per month. From 1999 to 2015, approximately 900 people died from drug-induced illnesses every year. This number continues to increase.
  3. Marijuana is the drug most often associated with crimes in Michigan. More than 55% of all drug-related arrests in the state are for marijuana. Most of these are for possession and distribution.
  4. Michigan also ranks tenth in the nation for the rate of opioid prescriptions. For every 100 people, approximately 85 prescriptions are written out. Every year, almost 10,000 people throughout the state are admitted into drug treatment centers for prescription opioid abuse.
  5. After heroin, methamphetamines are the second-largest drug threat. At one point in time, 80% of all counties in Michigan had active investigations into the use, possession, manufacturing, and distribution of the drug. This investigation resulted in an increase of 46% in two categories: arrest rates for use, possession, and/or delivery, as well as methamphetamine treatment admissions.

Impactful Addiction Stats

  1. On any given day in 2015, over 45,000 people across Michigan were admitted to drug treatment centers.
  2. Methamphetamine-related arrests and lab seizures throughout the state increase by 20% each year.
  3. More than one in three inmates in Michigan admit to a state of inebriation when arrested.
  4. In the two years from 2007 to 2009, methamphetamine lab seizures in Michigan increased by almost 300%–from 174 to 679 seizures.
  5. One in three Michigan high school students admit to having used marijuana more than once in their life, and one in twenty-five has done the same with cocaine.
  6. One in four unintentional drug overdoses in Michigan were caused or related to prescription opioid painkillers.
  7. A Michigan Department of Health and Human Services survey reports that one in ten residents aged 12 and older admit to using illicit drugs each month.
  8. The average rate of drug and/or alcohol-related deaths in Michigan is higher than the national average: 18.5 compared to 12.7.
  9. Marijuana in Michigan has a higher THC level because it is not grown in the United States. It is usually imported from Canada.
  10. One in four Michigan high school students use marijuana–making it one of the most commonly used substances of choice.
