According to New Jersey Advance Media, more than 2,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2016 alone. Among the three most densely populated cities in New Jersey, Jersey City had the highest rate of drug-and alcohol-related deaths, while Newark had the lowest.

- Heroin is the most abused substance in the state. A 2016 New Jersey Substance Abuse Monitoring System (NJ-SAMS) report states that heroin had the highest number of substance abuse treatment admissions–where 43% of all admissions were heroin-related.
- According to a 2010 government report, alcohol was the second most used drug in New Jersey. Exactly 13,710 people were admitted to treatment for alcohol as the primary substance of abuse and 9,254 people were admitted for alcohol combined with a secondary drug.
- Marijuana is the third most widely available and frequently abused illicit drug in the New Jersey region with 11,004 people seeking treatment in 2016.
- Cocaine is a primary drug of choice in several parts of the state. In 2010, 2,873 people were admitted to treatment for smoking cocaine with an additional 1,918 people admitted for cocaine addiction who used cocaine by means other than smoking.
