However, this drug was quickly surpassed by Fentanyl and the number of Fentanyl-related overdoses has only been increasing since. At one point, opioids caused such a high rate of overdoses in Ohio that cold storage units and trailers had to be converted into makeshift morgues.

The opioid epidemic has become so severe that it has even been referred to as a mass fatality crisis by various media outlets in Ohio. During the Trump Administration, it was also requested by the Drug Commission sector of the White House that the President declare this a state emergency.

Worst Drugs in Ohio

  1. Opioid-related overdose rates in Ohio are by far some of the highest in the country. This number increased by almost 800% from 2003 to 2015. Due to the many overdoses, a record amount of Ohio minors have entered the foster care system after losing their parents to opioid-related overdoses.
  2. For years, cocaine use in Ohio was associated with violent crimes. While more people have begun using cocaine in recent years due to the widespread availability and low cost, it is still the drug most often associated with violent crimes.
  3. For some time, marijuana was the most abused illicit drug and it is still one of the most common drugs in Ohio. The abuse rates are steadily increasing every year and one of the reasons for this is the legalization of medical marijuana in 2016.
  4. Methamphetamine use, abuse, and prevalence in Ohio is especially dangerous as they are readily available. The state ranks at number 7 in the United States for top producers of this drug.
  5. Even though the alcohol abuse rates in Ohio are not that much higher than the overall rate, it is still a troubling statistic for the state. Due to the amount of alcohol use and abuse, alcohol-related vehicle deaths are higher than the national average.

  2. While the state does not rank very high for its drug use (at 21/50), Ohio still ranks in the top 10 for illicit use of painkillers.
  3. More than 60 per 100 people in Ohio get an opioid prescription compared to a national average of 51.4 per 100 people.
  4. It is estimated that over 2% of all Ohio minors who are in need of substance abuse treatment do not or an unable to receive it.
  5. Over 4% of the Ohio population abuses alcohol every year and almost 15% use illicit drugs.
  6. The rate of deaths due to drugs and alcohol in Ohio is far above the national average at 16%, compared to 12.7%.
  7. Vehicle deaths in the state involving a drunk driver are above the national average for most age brackets except ages 0 to 20.
  8. Nearly 30% of all fatal alcohol-related vehicle crashes involved the death of a young Ohio resident between the ages of 21 and 30.
  9. Over 40% of those admitted into substance abuse treatment in Ohio is admitted for opioid abuse.
  10. The number of minors in the Ohio foster care system quadrupled between 2014 and 2015, and this number has been rising steadily due to parents overdosing.
