In addition, more than 20% of all admissions to state-funded recovery facilities in 2015 were attributed to opioids.

Due to drug-related activities, Florida has the fifth-highest rate of violent crime in the United States. In 2016 alone there were over 35,000 DUI arrests. The epidemic has reached such high levels that Governor Rick Scott declared the issue a public health emergency. As a result, he proposed legislation to provide $54 million in grants to expand substance abuse prevention and education programs and to provide treatment services for those in need.

Worst Drugs in Florida

  1. Alcohol is the most commonly cited abused substance in Florida. In 2009, 28,352 people were admitted for alcohol addiction or alcohol dependence with a secondary substance treatment. Between 2003 and 2012, a total of 8,000 drunk driving fatalities were reported in the state.
  2. Prescription drugs are also a commonly abused substance. In the year 2005-2006, 777,000 Floridians reported using prescription drugs for non-medical use. Hydrocodone and OxyContin continue to be a serious problem in the state. The Florida Medical Examiners report that on any given day approximately five people in Florida die as a direct result of a prescription drug overdose.
  3. Cocaine is the main drug threat and is available statewide. Between 2005 and 2006, 390,000 Floridians reported using cocaine. In 2009, 11,552 people were admitted to drug abuse treatment programs for smoking or ingesting cocaine. In 2015, 1,834 people died of cocaine overdoses.
  4. Marijuana is also on the list of most used drugs. In 2007, 24,812 Floridians were admitted to drug and alcohol addiction rehabs for marijuana dependence.
  5. Heroin is another substance used by Floridians. In 2009, 1,721 individuals entered treatment for heroin addiction.

  1. Between 2005 and 2006, 1.2 million Floridians (8% of the resident population) reported use of an illicit drug.
  2. More than 410,000 Floridians were dependent on illicit drugs between 2013 and 2014.
