Each year, approximately 13.56% of the state population uses illegal drugs, and another 5.83% abuse alcohol. Consequently, 17.32% of all deaths between 2008 and 2017 were drug and alcohol-related–a statistic more than 4.5% points above the national average.

There were an additional 5,998 people who were admitted for alcohol dependence combined with a secondary drug.
