Statewide, the major concerns are the misuse of prescription painkillers and the escalating number of deaths due to alcohol-related liver disease.

Each year, approximately 13.56% of the state population uses illegal drugs, and another 5.83% abuse alcohol. Consequently, 17.32% of all deaths between 2008 and 2017 were drug and alcohol-related–a statistic more than 4.5% points above the national average.

Local and national groups such as D.A.R.E. and the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth have responded by creating state-specific programs in an attempt to improve awareness of the problem.   1. Reports from 2007 showed that opioids were responsible for most drug-related deaths throughout Wisconsin. In 2010, fatalities linked to synthetic opioids increased from 66 to 288–with the majority resulting from Fentanyl use. Fatalities linked to prescription opioids also increased from 285 to 382.
  2. Heroin use and abuse also pose a major problem for Wisconsin residents. Fatalities linked to heroin increased from 92 in 2007 to 389 in 2010.
  3. Cocaine is also among the top used drugs in the state. In 2010, 1,514 people entered substance abuse treatment for smoking cocaine, and another 270 people ingested cocaine by other means. A Wisconsin Epidemiological Profile on Alcohol and Other Drugs for 2016 reported that cocaine was abused by 2% of the state population.
  4. The same profile also reported that marijuana abuse in Wisconsin was at a rate higher than the national average. Additional data also revealed marijuana to be the most commonly cited drug among primary drug treatment admissions within the state. In 2010, a reported 2,817 residents were admitted for marijuana dependence treatment.
  5. Similar to other states, alcohol also belongs to the list of worst abused drugs in Wisconsin. In 2010, 5,008 people entered drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers for alcohol dependence. There were an additional 5,998 people who were admitted for alcohol dependence combined with a secondary drug.

  9. According to reports from the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, the state had witnessed a decrease in the number of drug rehabs from 324 programs in 2002 to 290 by 2006.
